Custom Pool Coping Frequently Asked Questions

The design staff at All Seasons Pool & Spas will collaborate with you to create a stunning coping, deck, and patio plan. There are several possibilities for your pool’s coping, including travertine, quartz, and brick. Using an accent material for the coping highlights your pool’s form and gives it personality! Your pool will stand out from the crowd if you color the concrete, stamp it, or go all out with materials like paver bricks, flagstone, and travertine.

As with most pool and outdoor area topics, there are a lot of questions homeowners ask. We’ve compiled some of the most frequently asked questions to help you during your research. When you’re ready to get started renovating your pool and outdoor area, call our Orland Park design team. We’ll provide you with a free consultation and estimate.

What is the coping around my pool?

Coping, as used in common building language, is the masonry material used to cap a wall’s base. Every wall has some form of coping, and the one that adorns Gunite pools has particular features.

Coping is the material that is put on top of the “bond beam” of the pool shell and is often made of natural stone or other types of concrete. Normally, coping is built in a 12-inch band around the pool’s perimeter. The coping generally goes around the entirety of the pool, except in certain situations, such as waterfalls or other features.

What does coping do for my pool?

There are several areas where coping is important. Coping shields the bond beam of the pool and any exposed rebar points (steel bars). The material is mounted to form a barrier that stops water from getting behind the pool wall, which is a frequent source of structural damage. There is no need for a deck because the coping serves the purpose of capping off the pool bond beam.

Coping can also contribute to pool upkeep. Coping stops runoff by slightly extending beyond the inside boundaries of the pool. The slight angle prevents a bit of splashing, preventing you from losing excess water and exposing other areas of untreated concrete to continual water. Your swimmers are also safer and more comfortable with a coping as it provides a clean, visible indication of where the pool ends. It also allows swimmers to easier grab onto the edge of the pool to pull themselves up or as a handhold in the deep end where they cannot touch.

Finally, coping provides a beautiful aesthetic touch to your pool, further increasing curb appeal and resale value.

What material options do I have for my coping?

The majority of coping material options have a surface that is textured and non-slip. There is also a wide array of pricing, depending on your budget and style. Here is a list of the most popular materials used for pool coping:

  • Pre-Cast Concrete Stones
  • Concrete Pavers
  • Natural Stone Pavers
  • Poured-In-Place Concrete
  • Organic-Shape Stones
  • Brick
